Carnaval in Rio is the world's most famous party. Passionate, exuberant Rio comes alive when Carnival begins. As the temperature heats up, so do days of seemingly endless parades, balls and parties in Cidade Maravilhosa, or the "Marvelous City", as Rio is sometimes called.

Officially Carnival lasts 4 days, the 4 preceding Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. To compensate for the deprivation ahead, people rack up their sins in advance, with a deliriously carnal blowout in honor of King Momo, the king of Carnaval.

But don't think that Carnival in Rio only takes place in the Sambodromo (the stadium that hosts the famous Carnival Parade)! The weeks prior to Carnval are pre-parties for the big event. Each neighborhood in Rio has its favorite 'Banda' (Band) or 'Bloco' (Club) which consists of a group of musicians parading along a pre-determined route, pumping out Carnival samba favorites, followed by hordes of enthusiastic samba dancers dressed in costumes, bathing suits, regular clothes, and even in drag. One of the most famous is the Banda de Ipanema and it parades on the second Saturday before Carnival and then again on Carnival Saturday from around 5 - 9 pm. There are lots of bandas parading in Copacabana before and during Carnival too
